How sweet it is...Artificial sweeteners

There is a lot of confusion about whether or not one should use artificial sweeteners.  The long and the short of it is, if you do not have a medical condition that keeps you from sugars, than stay away from the artificial sweeteners.

When you taste sweet, the body assumes it is getting glucose in some form and the hormones start working.  The fight or flight syndrome kicks in and cortisol, epinephrine, and insulin are released.  However, if there is no glucose for the insulin to pick up, the body assumes it must protect itself from attack.  That means it will start packing adipose (fat) around the organs; hence, more fat around the mid section.

There are many choices for sweeteners.  Agave is one choice.  Agave is lower on the glycemic index than some other sugar choices, so it is less likely to spike the blood sugars.  However, it is a carbohydrate, so one must take that into account when one is trying to drop or maintain weight.
