The 80/20 rule

It is very difficult to eat exactly what you are supposed to eat all of the time.  You are busy and sometimes you just do not have time to pack foods.  Celebrations happen and celebrations usually mean cakes and starchy, sugary foods.  Does that mean you need to just not eat?  In a word:  No.

If you are eating a healthy, well-rounded diet, then it is OK to sometimes imbibe in the processed, less nutrient-dense foods.  Your body will work efficiently enough to filter the toxins from the cakes, cookies, mashed potatoes, and fatty meats if you keep them in moderation and focus your main diet on vegetables, lean meats, and whole fruits.  Also, when you stress about "falling off the wagon", your body believes it is under attack and releases cortisol, which causes you to gain more fat and feel guilty about enjoying the celebration.

So, what do you do?  You enjoy the celebration in moderation and you go back to your healthy eating habits as soon as it is over.
